The person that did the last review is correct in that there is a steep hill and hard corner to the left. The road coming in to the Exhibition Coal Mine is narrow and some crooked. I was told to come to the Rahall Company Store first. I checked in, paid the deposit for the key, unhooked my tow vehicle and was able to make it up to the campground without any problems in my 38 ft m/h. Big rigs come in and out pretty often. One thing was odd: I could not find the water and sewer hookups. It turned out they were under the rear of my m/h. It is very nice here. The only thing I didn't like was several barking dogs that lived somewhere down the hill. It is conveniently located for the tour as well as anything else in Beckley.

I called on 8-22-2009 and was told there were primitive electric sites available. The young girl checked and said there would be no reason to make a reservation. When I arrived the next day before noon I was told there was a dog show and the only sites available were in a field without electricity. I have been in over 300 campgrounds and this is the first time I have ever had this happen.

This is pretty much a self service campground. I called ahead, left a message and had to call again later in the day as I was never called back. I was told to take a site and someone would come around to collect. This is really like 2 separate campgrounds. The lower level by the river is grassy and has 30amp sites with water. The upper level is just a flat, filled in gravel area with 50amp, water and sewer. All back-in sites on the upper level. There is a picnic table and concrete slab at each site. The Wi-Fi is very good. The sign said $25 a night or $100 a week for the upper section. $20 a night or $75 a week for the lower level. I stayed in the upper level. The trains come by about every 3 hours. I can't imagine how loud the train noise must be in the lower level. The upper level laundry and bath house is brand new. It was fine for me. Not a KOA, which is right down the road.

This is a very nice campground. The site I was in was pretty level. Route 627 has a downgrade beside the campground. Trucks use their Jake brakes descending the grade. Next to the campground is a working quarry. There is more noise here than just about any place I have been. If you want a quiet place during the day, this is not it.
